The golden-crowned kinglet (Regulus satrapa) is a small bird that resides year-round in the cool spruce-fir forests of the highest mountains in Southern Appalachia. Characterized by their distinct black eye band and yellow crown, these birds seem to be constantly on the move while foraging for insects. Often heard before being seen, golden-crowned kinglets have high, nasally calls that echo through the canopy. They build their nests in the tops of trees, usually around 60’ high, with materials that range from moss to lichen to spiderwebs and plant materials. They can survive extremely harsh winters by remaining active, foraging consistently, and sometimes by huddling together to keep warm.
